Post-Menopausal Adrenal Support for A Healthy Sex Drive

by | Nov 10, 2017 | Women's Health, Hormone Imbalances

When we think about adrenal function, we tend to think about fatigue or stress hormones. But did you know that your adrenals play a significant role in your libido especially post-menopausal?

The adrenal glands are part of your endocrine system that regulates the body by secreting hormones directly into the bloodstream. These hormones are instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function, and reproductive processes.

The classic endocrine glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreatic islets, adrenals, and gonads (ovaries and testes). Prior to menopause the body relies on the gonads to support sexual function and sex drive. However, post-menopause it is the liver that is responsible for metabolizing our hormones, and our bodies rely on both the liver and adrenals to support the libido. Since a healthy liver balances hormones, regular liver detoxification can aid this process.

At the time of menopause, the adrenal glands should produce sufficient estrogen and progesterone to avoid unpleasant menopausal symptoms. However, in many women the adrenal glands are depleted due to prolonged stress or vitamin deficiencies. Therefore when the ovaries stop producing hormones, the adrenals do not produce enough to make up the difference and symptoms may occur such as vaginal dryness, insomnia, hot flashes, mood swings, and low libido.

If you feel as though you are suffering with these symptoms, call us to have your adrenal function assessed.

Tips you can take to support adrenals:

  • Incorporate protein and good fats into your meals and snacks and make sure you eat breakfast
  • Include 6-8 servings of a wide variety of vegetables in your meals, especially those that are bright in color.
  • Manage stress: yoga, meditation, do something that gives you joy
  • Sleep 8 hours a night- unplug from electronics at least an hour before bed
