Depression is very common, but you may still feel alone, helpless, and lost. Long term depression can be debilitating. Getting out of bed is a Spartan feat, and yet falling asleep is almost impossible.
While some depression is caused by circumstances such a loss of a loved one, it can become a physical problem. Doctors may prescribe medications that work at first, and then stop. If the underlying issue is not addressed, depression can become a chronic condition.
Vitamin D & Depression
When I work with depressed clients, I often find that their Vitamin D levels are deficient. Deficient Vitamin D levels impact the production of important ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters like serotonin. Vitamin D receptors are found in the amygdala (the part of the brain that controls emotion), which influences production of serotonin. When Vitamin D is low, production of serotonin can be reduced.
Vitamin D & Magnesium
Unfortunately, treating depression isn’t as simple as taking Vitamin D. Along with talk therapy and exercise (yoga!), other supplements might be necessary. Without an adequate amount of magnesium, your body can’t use Vitamin D, no matter how much of it you are taking. Vitamin D can get stored in its inactive form due to magnesium or K2 deficiency. With magnesium being so important for digestion, this may be the reason why people with depression also struggle with constipation.
Vitamin D and Digestion
Your ability to absorb fats can affect your vitamin D level as it is a fat-soluble vitamin. Individuals with digestive issues and a reduced ability to absorb dietary fat might require digestive support or vitamin D supplementation. A metabolic panel blood test typically will reflect the body’s ability to absorb fats.
How do I know if I’m Vitamin D Deficient?
It is important to check your vitamin and mineral levels before taking supplements. Not everyone that struggles with depression is Vitamin D deficient, so taking a supplement could just be a waste of money. And if you are Vitamin D deficient, you may also need magnesium or K2 to activate your body’s full healing response.
